Windows 11 Gets New Start Menu

Microsoft has released a new version of the Start menu for Windows 11, now available for testers in the Dev Channel. This updated interface introduces a scrollable design and enhanced customization options, offering users a fresh way to interact with their operating system.

The revamped Start menu brings two new views: category and grid. The default category view organizes applications by type, providing quick access to commonly used programs. Alternatively, the grid view lists apps alphabetically, similar to a traditional list, but with a more spacious layout. Users can also choose to disable the recommended section, allowing more space for their pinned applications.

This adaptive design ensures a consistent user experience across various devices. On larger screens, the Start menu will display more pinned apps, recommendations, and categories. Smaller devices will see a more compact layout, optimizing for limited screen real estate.

Beyond the visual changes, the update also includes additional functionality. A new mobile device button has been added to the Start menu, allowing users to expand or collapse the Phone Link interface, facilitating cross device integration. Furthermore, users can now customize lock screen widgets and utilize a Gamepad keyboard for signing into their PC with a PIN code using a controller, which is particularly beneficial for handheld gaming devices.

Microsoft initially previewed these changes in Windows 11 builds in April, with an official announcement following last month. Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel can now experience these updates firsthand.
